of how one man achieved his goal, despite overwhelming
odds. After losing his eyesight, Bill sets out to walk
the 2,169 mile Appalachian Trail with only his guide dog
to help him. Bill is an inspirational role model for
students. (22 minutes) Armed with Hope
Inspirational video documentary about John Foppe who
learned at an early age that "our only real
handicaps are those mental and emotional ones that
prevent us from participating fully in life." John
Foppe was born without arms . While the sight of how he
tackles life with his toes will amaze you, once you hear
his message you will not be looking at him -- you will be
looking at yourself. John will take away your excuses and
give you a new sense of hope. (30 minutes) Cool Runnings Based on a true story about the unlikely formation of a Jamacian bobsled to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics. The participants have never even seen snow, let alone a bobsled. (98 minutes) Developing Internal Self-Esteem Constance
Dembrowsky offers proven techniques for educators and
parents to help youth develop the skills and behaviors
necessary for an internally based self-esteem which
results in the confidence to get what they want in life
in ways that maintain dignity for themselves and others.
Conveniently divided into five segments, it is an ideal
staff development training tool. (120 minutes) Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-off Eddie Ogden is a normal, but talented eight-grader who likes baseball, plays first base for his team, the Groundhogs, and is the best player in the league. But Eddie also has a secret he loves to cook and is a natural-born chef. In pursuing his love, Eddie enrolls himself and his friends (who are also his Groundhog teammates) in home economics class. It is here that Eddie is given the chance to enter the "Million Dollar Cook-off" -- a professional level cooking contest for middle school students, the prize for which is a million dollar scholarship to a prestigious culinary institute. Eddie struggles with his wish to play baseball and his love of cooking, with wanting to fit in with his friends and learning his craft. But Eddie struggles most with gaining the acceptance of his rather sexist dad, who just happens to be his coach and who wants only for Eddie to become a big league ball player. Including a guest appearance by The Food Network's Bobby Flay, this film is a humorous, but also sensitive portrayal of a boy with difficulty following his dream and of a father coming to terms with his son who wants to do a girl thing. Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God) and Jack Jason are the executive producers for Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-off, which debuted on the Disney Channel on July 18, 2003. Though not yet available on DVD or video, Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-off can still be seen regularly on the Disney Channel. (85 minutes) Practical Parenting (video tapes), Wagonseller, Dr. Bill, United Learning, 6633 West Howard St., Niles, IL 60648, Telephone: (800) 323-9468 Rudy Based-on-fact account of Rudy Ruettiger a working-class boy intent on realizing his dream of playing football at Notre Dame despite his uninspiring academic record and unimposing athletic ability. (112 minutes) Stand and Deliver Based on a true story about a tough, demanding and inspiring high school teacher who motivates a class full of East Los Angeles barrio kids to care enough about mathematics to pass an Advanced Placement Calculus Test. (99 minutes) Tru Confessions
Trudy Walker, who friends and family call "Tru,"
is a twelve-year-old girl whose goal in life is to be a
broadcast journalist. Tru's twin brother, Eddie, has been
developmentally challenged since birth. In addition to
dealing the struggles of just being a teenager, Tru is
torn between her love for her brother, her difficulty in
understanding how to help him, and her guilt that Eddie
was born challenged and she was not. Based on the book of
the same name by Janet Tashjian, Tru Confessions was
produced for The Disney Channel and premiered on April 5,
2002. I have not been able to find the movie as a video
for sale, but it still airs on The Disney Channel. (95
